Some of you, perhaps, is wondering why Sony has opted for an outdated platform, Intel Calpella, instead of adopting the new Intel Huron River. The response of the Japanese and the choice is pretty Logic: Intel plans to launch only between a few months the new Intel Sandy Bridge most suitable for low-power notebook in this category. Sony had initially decided to produce only one version of VAIO Y, Brazos with AMD, but eventually chose to satisfy even the supporters of the Santa Clara.

The big news is in fact Sony VAIO YB, an ultraportable is based on the new AMD mobile platform with Brazos APU (Accelerated Processing Unit) Zacate. VAIO YB is so that mysterious VAIO appeared a few days ago and that you do not know the name. Here below the specifications of Sony VAIO YB expected in Italy:

  • Processor: AMD Dual Core Zacate E-350 at 1.6GHz
  • Memory: 2GB DDR3 1066MHz, 2 slot
  • Hard Drive: 320GB 5400rpm
  • Display: 11.6 inch WXGA LED Backlight HD (1366 x 768 pixels)
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon HD6310M integrated into the APU
  • Audio: 2 speakers Dolby Sound Room
  • Networking: Wi-Fi b / g / n, Gigabit Ethernet, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR
  • Interfaces: HDMI, VGA, audio jack, 3 USB 2.0 ports, memory card reader
  • Operating system: Windows 7 Professional 32bit
  • Battery: 6 cells (max 6 hours)
  • Dimensions: 290 x 202.8 x 25-31.5 mm
  • Weight: 1.46 Kg (with battery)
  • Other: 0.3 megapixel Motion Eye webcam, touchpad multitouch

Sony states that thanks to its DirectX 11 compatible graphics component, VAIO YB is able to offer a complete HD experience, with smooth playback of high definition video. One of the flaws identified in this model is undoubtedly given by the RAM and the embedded operating system. YB only integrates Vaio 2GB DDR3 (rather limited for multitasking) and 32-bit edition of Windows 7 (which limits the hardware upgrades). In fact, only a 64bit OS allows the installation of 4GB of RAM or more.

The purpose of the Japanese with his new Sony VAIO YA and YB is to propose a good compromise between mobility, range and performance (general and graphics). Sony VAIO YA will be available in Italy (at the technical details on Sony,it is incomplete) in late January at a price of about Rs. 46,964/- Sony VAIO YB, however, is expected a month later, ie in February 2011. The model presented is expected to retail for Rs. 29,352/-
